The Gothic Quarter is one of the oldest and most interesting districts of Barcelona for tourists. Right there you´ll find "La Rambla', a two kilometer avenue which stretches from Plaza Catalunya to Barcelona's Port, it is generally considered the essence of Barcelona. Included on the list of "Must Seen" is the Boqueria Market (an open air fresh food market), the Gothic Church (barroca de Betlem), the Palacio de Moya, the Academia de las Ciencias and the Casa Bruno Cuadros. The area used to be known as the neighbourhood of the Cathedral but nowadays its better known as the Gothic Quarter. It is the center of Barcelona's history and it is also the oldest urbanized part of the city. Throughout the centuries and up today it has had the role of being Barcelona's political and Institutional center. Here you will find the magnificent Gothic structures built during Barcelona's zenith which give evidence of the important Barcelona's cultural role during the Middle Ages. The City Council has also preserved the old Roman fortifications and palaces such as the Temple dedicated to Augusto and some of the Roman walls still remain intact. The Gothic Quarter is visited by thousands of tourists each year. It´s easy to loose yourself in the quaint windy streets. The variety of tapa bars and restaurants will bring you a worthwhile coffee break. On Carrer de Ferran street and Carrer Jaume 1 street (and most of the streets in the upper half of the Gothic Quarter), you will find all kinds of shops, from the well known high-street clothes stores to little stationary shops. In the lower half of the Gothic Quarter towards the Port area the streets get narrow and a little gloomy, but they have their own attractions and are worth to visit even just to try some of the local pastries and cakes in one of the many café's.
